La péripneumonie contagieuse bovine (PPCB) atteint les poumons et les membranes qui entourent la cavité thoracique (plèvre). Elle se manifeste par de la fièvre et des signes respiratoires. Cette maladie très contagieuse est associée à un taux de mortalité pouvant atteindre 50% et est à l’origine d’importantes pertes économiques. Au Sénégal, la vaccination de masse contre la maladie avait été arrêtée en 2005 suite à l’absence de cas notée depuis 1978. Cependant, la réapparition de la maladie en 2012 dans la région de Tambacounda a poussé les autorités étatiques à ordonner la reprise de la vaccination de masse contre la maladie. L’objectif général de cette étude est d’établir la situation de référence de la PPCB dite « enquêteT0-PPCB » afin de pouvoir faire le suivi de la prévalence de la maladie dans le pays. Le protocole sondage stratifié sur le risque (risque de survenue de la maladie) avec une sélection aléatoire simple a été choisi. Quatre strates ont été définies selon le risque : n°1 = risque négligeable ; n°2 = risque faible, n°3 = risque élevé et n°4 = risque très élevé. L’unité épidémiologique retenue est la commune. Les animaux présentant des troubles respiratoires au cours des deux dernières années ont été choisis, puis complété à 30 avec des femelles âgées. Au total, 1488 échantillons sur les 1500 prévus ont été collectés et transmis pour des analyses avec le test ELISA Compétition. Après tri, les 97,65% ont été analysés par le laboratoire national de l’élevage et de Recherches vétérinaires. Un animal est dit positif quand le pourcentage d’inhibition (PI) est supérieur ou égal à 57, douteux quand le PI se situe entre 50 et 56% et négatif quand le PI est inférieur à 50. Les résultats sérologiques ont montré 101 animaux positifs avec 76 cas douteux. Au total, 13 régions sur les 14 soit (92,85%) et 25 départements sur les 30 soit (83,33%) enquêtés sont positifs. Les enquêtes ont révélés que les femelles sont les plus touchées par la maladie avec (94,36%) et les males (5,64%). Au niveau des différentes strates les résultats ont montré que contrairement aux prévisions, les prévalences les plus fortes sont notées dans les strates supposées à risque faible (88%) suivies respectivement de celles à risque élevé (71%), à risque très élevé (67%) et enfin à risque négligeable (50%). Ainsi, les campagnes de vaccination de masse arrêtées en 2005 ont été reprises en 2013. Depuis, le taux de couverture vaccinale évolue progressivement vers l’objectif de (80%) et l’impact de la vaccination ne sera connu que dans les années à venir.
